Vintage measures

The drawers at my grandparents homes were always filled with a hodgepodge collection of tools, letters, rubber bands, eyeglasses--you name it. In particular, I remember wooden folding rulers, used to measure the height of ever-growing grandkids. At RE, you can buy all sorts of vintage rulers, dents in the soft wood guaranteed. And at Viva Terra, a completely charming chair made out of vintage rulers.

Taxidermy: the new centerpiece?

I've seen a couple of mentions of taxidermy in fashionable places lately, and it's wholly intriguing to me. It's very Victorian, very macabre--sort of Edgar Allen Poe and Norman Bates sharing a flat. Would you put a dead animal in your home? In my fantasy world I would, but real life? I'm not sold.

On Decor8, Deyrolle Paris is mentioned as a source for scientific/botanical illustrations ... and also stuffed animals, large and small. These things don't come cheap, let me tell you:

The March issue of Elle Decor (UK) featured the work of Polly Morgan, a serious British taxidermist with a flair for darkness:

I love this ... cloches have come back into fashion as decorative objects, and I see them popping up all over the place. Morgan frequently employs bell jars/cloches in her still lifes, but quite differently than Martha Stewart does! I love the one on the right; it's very Hitchcockian.

L'orange

I'm hot for everything in this cheerful color right now. We've got splashes of orange all over the house (lots of it from Target):

The half bath downstairs is a bright, almost luminous, tangerine. It looks sort of red in the photo. When the door is cracked and the light in the bathroom is on, this sunny glow spills out into the room.

In our bedroom, this striped quilt is on the bed. Above it hangs this painting by Angela, with lots of bright color:

In the kitchen, this colander from Reston Lloyd is a decorative element as well as a functional piece.

I've got a few of these bowls in orange and turquoise from the Global Bazaar line (now on clearance) at Target:

And my most recent orange purchase, this bag by Rafe for Target. Oh, I'm in lurve:
